New suggestions in the Suspense step are easy to miss

When a save teaches the server, other entries in the Suspense step get a suggestion. They stay in that step (by rule), and nothing points the user at them. In the alpha test, 14 such entries got a 72–97% suggestion and were still exported to Suspense. Below are four ways to fix it. You can try each one in a working mock of the Suspense step.

In short
  • All 14 missed entries got the same ledger the user had just chosen (Cash Account, BIKE FUEL EXPENSES, JAY ART, GST, SHIV SAKTI ART).
  • A: a count in the sticky header + Ctrl+Shift+Enter to accept. B: a mark on rows + F8 to jump. C: a “Now suggested” filter in the step. D: offer them right after the save, in the pop-up that the app already shows for the same payee.
  • Recommendation: D + A. D asks at the moment the user knows the answer. A catches the rest (Escape, rows above, other ledgers) with the key that users already use (17 of 18 accepts in the Suggestions step used Ctrl+Shift+Enter).

Try the options

The mock is the Suspense step of the KESARI NANDAN ART import (HDFC current account): 25 rows taken from the alpha data, with person names and account numbers removed. The red suggestion on MAHAVIR STORE is added to show that edge case. Saves take 0.3 s, and new suggestions arrive 0.7 s later, as on the server.

Keys work when focus is in the mock. Selection (Space) and the other steps are not part of the mock.

OptionGoodNot so goodThe 14 alpha entriesEffort
A Count in header + accept allAlways in view (sticky). One key. Same key as in Suggestions, which users already use. Reaches rows above without moving focus.Accepts without a look at each row. The user does not see which rows, unless they scroll. All 14 counted. One key press accepts them (all were green or yellow).Small (≈ ½ day)
B Row marks + F8The user checks each row. No bulk mistakes. Marks also help later, in Review.A new key to learn. Needs a visit to each row. Easy to ignore, as today. All 14 marked. 14 × (F8, Ctrl+Enter).Small–medium (≈ 1 day)
C “Now suggested” filterSee all new ones together, with their narration, then accept. Nothing in the list moves.A mode to remember. The switch scrolls away at the top of the table. Users must think to open it.All 14 listed, if the user opens the filter.Medium (≈ 1–1½ days)
D Offer right after the saveAsks when the user knows the answer (“yes, same pump”). Reuses the same-payee pop-up and its setting. Lists rows above too.A pop-up after a save can annoy. Waits ≈ 1 s for the server. Escape loses them. Does not cover suggestions of a different ledger. All 14: each was the ledger just chosen.Medium (≈ 1–1½ days)
D + A (recommended)D at the moment of the choice. A as the safety net for anything left (Escape, typing, bulk saves, other ledgers). Two pieces of UI to build and to test. All 14, two ways.≈ 2 days

Edge cases

CaseABCD
Red (unsure) suggestionNot in accept all. The line says “1 unsure one (red mark) is left for you”.Marked, with its red mark.Listed. Not in accept all.Listed but not ticked.
Suggestion changes again (GST: yellow → green after the 2nd choice)Count stays. Accept takes the latest ledger.Mark stays. The colour changes.Row stays. The colour changes. Not offered again for the same ledger. An open pop-up gets new rows at its end.
Rows above the current rowCounted and accepted. Focus does not move.Reached with Shift+F8, or F8 wraps with “Back to the first one, above”.Listed in statement order.Listed in the pop-up.
Suggestion goes away (user clears the choice that taught it)Count goes down.Mark goes.Row stays listed until you switch back, so nothing jumps.Removed from an open pop-up.
User is typing in a Ledger box when suggestions arriveOnly the count changes.Only marks change.Only the count changes. No pop-up (it would take focus). The status line says it instead.
Focus after acceptingStays on the current row. If that row was accepted, focus goes to the next open entry below. Focus never jumps up after a save, in every option.

Recommendation: D + A

If you choose B or C instead, the keys are F8 / Shift+F8 (not a letter: letters on a row start a ledger search, and Alt+Shift switches the keyboard language on Windows) and Alt+S.
